Pros and Cons of Auto Navigation Systems and GPS Devices
You can find GPS devices everywhere - your car, boat, plane, even your pocket or purse (if you have a PDA or cell phone with GPS capabilities combined with the right software and/or subscriptions). You also have the option and capability of turning your laptop computer into a GPS device if using mapping software and a GPS receiver. We use this while on the road in our motor home. With all of these great features, you really have to look at how easy each different device is to use.
When you look into buying a device there are several things to look at and ask about.
First, as we age, our eyesight can create problems – make sure you like the display on your GPS and that the color and contrast match your eyesight. Using your GPS outdoors also means that the backlighting capability needs to be great. It’s no fun to have to shade the device screen to read it.
Second, your device can not be used - other than showing your location – without adding data into the device. Make sure you know how to input addresses, locations, coordinates, etc. before you travel. Some devices make this easier than others. The ability to transfer data from your computer is a plus.
Third, make sure you have the right map set for your intended use. Most devices contain a basic set of maps. Our hand-held GPS will show all interstate highways, and most state roads. It does not show secondary roads. So if you want to use your GPS for locating addresses in town, you need to add those maps, which can be expensive. Another example is that we use our handheld for hiking – we purchased it with topographical maps of the east coast. It shows many Forest Service roads, streams, elevation, and many trails.
Fully investigate these attributes to fully use and enjoy your mapping GPS device.
