GPS Caution

Make the most out of your GPS – Carefully!

There are a few things to remember when you start GPS use. Let’s outline these here:

1) You still need to carry an Atlas or road maps for backups. We find that trip planning is easier when you can look at an overall map of the country, state, or city without having to pan the screen from side to side. We also like to see attractions like state parks and campgrounds, which may show up in a detailed GPA view, but not when looking at the larger picture.

2) Remember that your GPS data is not always accurate. Roads are built, close, and in need of repair and maintenance all the time. It's nearly impossible to have a GPS that is always correct – up to the minute.

2) These devices do not typically work well inside buildings or under dense forest cover.

3) Batteries are critical. Be sure you have extra batteries for backup, and you’re your GPS charged so it is ready to go.

4) GPS units do not always recognize the existence of mountains, rivers, and other obstructions in your path so the directions and coordinates they give can occasionally be misleading.

There are many pros and cons to not only auto navigation devices but also for handheld GPS devices as well. If possible, try out the model you are considering before you buy it. Talk to other users as well, they will be glad to share their experiences.
